Singapore's first floating Energy Storage System (ESS) has won the Outstanding Smart City Project

Singapore’s first floating Energy Storage System (ESS), jointly piloted by Keppel Offshore & Marine and the Energy Market Authority (EMA), has won the Outstanding Smart City Project accolade for urban planning and land use at the IDC Smart City Asia/Pacific Awards 2022.

The Keppel O&M-EMA floating #ESS, which is being developed with a consortium led by Envision Digital International, consists of a 7.5MW / 7.5MWh lithium-ion battery ESS installed on Keppel O&M’s Floating Living Lab. When completed in 2023, this will be one of Singapore’s largest ESS deployments with sufficient capacity to power more than 600 4-room HDB flats a day.

The floating ESS is also the first-of-its-kind battery stacking solution in Singapore, which can potentially reduce the footprint required for deployment of ESSs by up to 40%. Findings from the project are expected to be applied to ESSs in other parts of Singapore, supporting #powergrid stability and resilience, and facilitating the adoption of more #renewables such as #solarenergy.

Mr Chris Ong, CEO of Keppel O&M, said, “We are pleased that Keppel’s floating ESS solution with EMA has been recognised among the best Smart City projects in Asia Pacific by IDC. Energy storage can dramatically transform the way the world uses energy, making it more flexible, reliable and efficient for consumers to harness the power of renewables. Our innovative floating ESS has the potential for multiple applications, whether at sea or on land, and can contribute to the energy transition and advance climate action.”
